Job Summary
The Division of Pediatric Neurology at the University of Utah School of Medicine is seeking a Complex Epilepsy Clinical Nurse. This position provides clinical expertise and coordination of care and services aimed at enhancing patient-centered care and maximizing outcomes across the patient care continuum – including monitoring patient care to ensure progress towards desired outcomes, addressing patient and family needs, resolving obstacles to effective care and together with the interdisciplinary team.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions
Acts as the key coordinator and contact for the patient, patient care plan, and care team.
Identifies, assesses, and communicates patient and family care needs throughout the patient diagnosis.
Assesses, plans, and implements interventions for solving patient care problems.
Acts as clinical resource and support for care team to address complex patient needs and assist with complex procedures.
Collaborates with care team to identify burden of care and assign core team members.
Participates in complex epilepsy management conferences once a week, brings updates on patient progress and/or concerns.
Some inpatient rounding with the care team on patient population will be required dependent upon need.
Attends and participates in team program meetings.
Updates and monitors nursing orders as needed based on care plan changes.
Develops and participates in educating patients, their families, or caregiver including – recent orders, care plan, diagnosis, medications, etc.
Attends clinic visits with care provider as needed.
Maintains communication with patient population and prepares pre-clinic visit assessments.
Formulates care plans for patient population and documents communication in patient record.
Provides guidance and direction to members of the healthcare team to ensure quality patient care.
Keeps current on advances in pediatric neurology nursing care by participating in educational programs and relevant associations.
Participates in total quality management to positively affect patient and system outcomes to improve care.

Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation.

This position involves intensive work that may exert up to 100 pounds and may consistently require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving objects, such as medical equipment, or patients while providing medical care. Workers in this position may be exposed to infectious diseases and may be required to function around prisoners and behavioral health patients.

The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient’s status and provide care as described in the department’s policies and procedures manual.


Minimum Qualifications
Required
Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Utah, or obtain one within 90 days of hire under the interstate compact if switching residency to State of Utah. Must maintain current Interstate Compact (multi-state) license if residency is not being changed to Utah.
Preferred
Some positions may require additional certifications such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), or Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) within one year of hire.
This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. Open to new nursing graduates.
Interest in seizure or epilepsy.
Within six months of hire, will study for, take, and successfully obtain the Certified Seizure and Epilepsy Healthcare Professional (C-SEHP) certification offered by the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses (AANN). Supplies to study for the test will be provided and the exam cost will be reimbursed after successfully obtaining certification.
