Job Description

Job Summary
Installs new software releases and system upgrades, evaluates, and installs patches, and resolves system related problems. Maintains data files and monitors system configuration to ensure data integrity. System administration and support of Research Computing and CHPC at the University of Utah.

The Center for High Performance Computing (CHPC) at the University of Utah provides advanced scientific computing services to a broad set of leading-edge, computationally oriented faculty, research staff, and graduate students in several research disciplines on campus. The CHPC team includes a diverse set of systems and network experts, scientific programming consultants, and user services leads. CHPC operates several computational clusters, virtual machine farms and storage arrays. We are also starting to leverage public cloud services for researchers.

Responsibilities
Provide system administration maintenance and development in a technical and diverse environment including one or more of the following:
Administer system to process data backups to object (Ceph/S3) storage
Windows server and Active Directory administration
HPC Cluster administration including batch (slurm), GPU, and parallel filesystem support
Virtual Machine hypervisor/cluster administration
Provisioning and maintenance of virtual machines and bare metal stand-alone servers
File system support (local, network and parallel)
· Contribute to the overall security of systems for the department
· Contribute to the overall monitoring, metrics, and reporting needs of the department.
· Review log files for indication of inappropriate or unusual activity.
· Attend departmental & institutional meetings and conferences and participate, contribute and/or present as appropriate, network with peer institutes and form collaborative relationships.

Minimum Qualifications
Requires a bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalency with at least 2 years of experience in the field or in a related area.

Preferences
Departmental preference:
· Strong system administration skills in a heterogeneous computing environment for a very diverse multidisciplinary academic environment required.
· Experience in Unix/Linux system administration and Linux network understanding required.
· Experience in system administration of Windows servers and Active Directory preferred.
· A commitment to provide excellent customer service required.
· Demonstrate ability to be a flexible, organized, thoughtful, and proactive team player who can work with minimal guidance as well as strong abilities in communication and in customer service.
· Comfortable working in a team environment supporting technologies critical to the research mission of the University.
· Ability to maintain a culture of openness, trust, and transparency while ensuring a safe and secure environment for our customers.
· Ability to provide technical support, trouble shoot problems, install software, and provide solutions in support of the CHPC user community.
