Job Description

At Moffitt Cancer Center, we recognize the importance of a smooth transition from nursing student to practicing clinician. Our goal for our newly licensed registered nurses is to provide an environment that prepares them to function safely, accurately, and compassionately. To facilitate the transition and to promote adoption of oncology as a specialty practice, we have developed an Ambulatory Care Oncology Nurse Residency Program.

Our program is designed to equip novice nurses to:

  • Develop ability in clinical decision-making.
  • Expand capacity for critical thinking.
  • Develop clinical autonomy in patient care.
  • Incorporate research-based evidence into practice, and
  • Strengthen commitment to oncology nursing through promotion of professional growth and job satisfaction.

Newly licensed BSN nurses complete a 12-week clinical orientation rotating through 3 ambulatory areas. While in each clinical area, nurse residents are assigned to work with a preceptor. Upon completion of the 12-week rotation and based on openings and best fit for both the nurse resident and clinical area, the nurse resident is matched to an area. For the first twelve months of practice, nurse residents will participate in programs outside of their unit for one or two days each month.

In addition to time in the classroom and simulation, nurse residents will meet with their residency group monthly to reflect on collective experiences and challenges. This reflective practice leads to developmental insight and assists in closing the gap between theory and practice. Prior to finishing the residency, nurses will be assigned a mentor, who will provide ongoing support and guidance. Graduates of our program will be prepared to apply for advancement through our Clinical Ladder. The focus of these programs will vary but will include both clinical and professional topics such as the examples listed below.

Professional Topics:

  • Prioritization and Time Management, Conflict Resolution, Stress Reduction & Self-Care, Evidence Based Practice, Communication, Professional Development

Clinical Topics:

  • Patient & Family Centered Care, Patient Assessment & Documentation, End-of-Life Care, Pain Management, Oncology Symptom Management, Chemotherapy Theory & Practice

We are currently looking for a Nurse Resident for our Outpatient Oncology Clinics.
