Position Summary
The Department of History & Political Science at Southern Oregon University seeks a tenure-track assistant professor with teaching and research expertise in the history of Asia. Historians working in comparative history, social or cultural history, or diasporic studies are especially encouraged to apply.
Professorial faculty members typically teach three classes per eleven-week quarter, with three quarters comprising the regular academic year. The Department has a strong commitment to supporting faculty research. We offer a collegial peer environment that encourages collaboration among faculty across history, political science, international studies, and the rest of the humanities and social sciences. New faculty members can expect a mix of teaching responsibilities including introductory surveys, upper-division discussion and lecture courses, and methods and capstone courses.
As a tenure-track faculty member, the new hire will be expected to engage in ongoing professional development and maintain a balance of teaching, service, and scholarship.
Application materials should include the following: a cover letter (describing teaching and research interests), curriculum vitae, statement of teaching philosophy, and three letters of recommendation. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in History by the time of appointment in September 2022.

Minimum Qualifications
Initial appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor requires a terminal degree in the History of Asia or a closely related discipline.
Prior evidence of college/university level teaching equivalent to one full year of teaching.
Applicants should possess a record of excellence in communicating research findings as evidenced by conference presentations and journal publications, and demonstrate a commitment to excellent teaching and scholarship.
Applicants should provide documented evidence of scholarly activities.
Applicants should be able to demonstrate a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion as well as experience working with students from underrepresented minorities.
Preferred Qualifications
Two or more years of college/university level teaching
Primary instructor for courses in different areas of Asian history
Primary instructor for courses that transcend state or subregional borders
Significant demonstrated experience mentoring students – especially those from underrepresented minorities
