Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) is a partnership of NC State University, NC A&T State University and the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The Center for Environmental Farming Systems develops and promotes just and equitable food and farming systems that conserve natural resources, strengthen communities, improve health outcomes, and provide economic opportunities in North Carolina and beyond. Our goals are to: provide new economic opportunities in rural and urban communities, develop technologies that promote a cleaner and healthier environment, educate the next generation of farmers, consumers, and scientists, and engage all citizens in the food system.
Essential Job Duties
Apprenticeships are a tried-and-true model of learning that have trained workers for careers in skilled trades for centuries. The North Carolina’s Veteran Farmer Apprenticeship (NC VFA) project is expected to develop and implement a registered beginning farmer apprenticeship for veterans in eastern NC that increases the number of veteran beginning farmers. This registered apprenticeship program would provide both long-term hands-on training at a production farm and business planning training. The 12-month apprenticeship will become a model for other organizations to implement to increase agricultural opportunities for veterans in North Carolina.
The primary purpose of this position is to develop and lead programming for the Boots On the Ground: NC VFA. This new project will bring together a large team of statewide agricultural education experts and veteran programming experts, in with this position will oversee. The primary responsibilities of the incumbent include, but are not limited to:
Serve on the Project Advisory Team (PAT).
Oversee all program logistics, hiring, social media, and communications.
Organize apprentice gatherings/training and register the apprenticeship with ApprenticeshipNC.
Coordinate with host farms, farmer veteran mentors, and apprentices to ensure program success.
As a mentor to the apprentices, be the main point of contact from the beginning of the program, answer questions, orient them the first week in training, and meet with apprentices monthly during the program to monitor their progress.
Build and maintain relationships with the veteran farming community across the state to promote the apprenticeship, gather feedback and maintain program sustainability.
Additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience
Master’s degree in Agricultural and/or Extension Education or related field, with at least 3 years of experience working with military veterans and experiential agricultural education, or a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Education or related field, with at least 5 years of relevant professional experience.
Other Required Qualifications
Applicant must have demonstrated ability to mentor veteran caregivers, farmer veterans, and organize and lead gatherings for various veterans’ groups.
Excellent organizing, people, decision-making, project management, and time management skills.
Ability to work well in remote and in-person settings.
Capable of doing all the described activities independently as well as work with a team under direction of the Project Director and other members of the PAT.
Must be comfortable to make decisions autonomously and work with little direction.
Highly independent and proactive individual with excellent communication skills (written, oral, presentation, etc.).
Experience with NC Extension, NIFA research, and other academic outreach programs.
Experience with organizing teams and event planning.
Experience planning and implementing educational programs.
Extensive knowledge and experience in agriculture, particularly livestock management, horticulture, greenhouses, regenerative ag., organic ag., and sustainable agriculture in general.
Experience and established networks with the veteran farming community across NC, as well as with online communication, Google Suite, and social media platforms.
