Job Function:

Manage Ball State University Foundation’s major gift staff; work in partnership with the Vice President for Development to create the philanthropic strategy for major giving; monitor staff metrics and produce reports; maintain a portfolio of 20-30 high level donors and prospects.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.

Preferred Education:

Master’s or doctoral degree from an accredited institution.

Minimum Experience:

Five years of professional development experience.

Major gift experience in higher education or related area.

Experience as a successful member of a multi-staff major gifts team.

Direct involvement with six-figure and seven-figure gifts/solicitations.

Preferred Experience:

Experience with one or more of the other non-major gift areas such as planned giving, corporate giving and foundation grants.

At least seven years of experience in successful fundraising and in planning and implementing a comprehensive campaign.

Experience in higher education or comparable area.

Leadership of a multi-staff major gifts team.

Three years of experience in higher education fundraising.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan, direct, and manage all activities and professional staffing of assigned major gifts team; develop and implement an annual operating plan for the area; includes the articulation of broad goals, specific program objectives, and individual fundraising metrics; provide regular reports charting progress against these operating goals; effective use of moves-management systems.
  • Responsible for interviewing and selection, supervision, coaching, performance appraisal, training, and career development of major gift officers.
  • Serve as a senior fundraiser for major gifts, manage a portfolio of major gift donors and prospects, and provide leadership for university-wide major gift donors/prospects.
  • Work closely with the Foundation President and Vice President for Development in the identification of fund raising priorities; execute or direct the execution of fund raising programs to attain such priorities.
  • Demonstrate people management experience with excellent coaching and talent development skills.
  • Consult with senior university officers, faculty, staff, students, and alumni to ensure effective coordination and understanding of the major gift development effort.
  • Work closely with key university constituents including members of University Board of Trustees, Foundation Board of Directors, Alumni Council leadership, community and business leaders, corporate and foundation officials, parents, alumni, friends and volunteers.
  • Plan, develop, and implement a major gifts program that includes the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of individual prospective donors and work with appropriate staff to help prepare and manage formal proposals.
  • Maintain familiarity with important issues related to higher education and public policy and keep current with new developments in institutional advancement through participation in workshops and seminars with peers in the field; participate in Alumni Association activities to build and maintain close relationships with key alumni.
  • Manage budgetary needs for the areas assigned with fiscal reporting responsibilities as directed by the Vice President for Development and other appropriate foundation leadership.
  • Represent Ball State University at public functions and special events; provide support in the planning and implementation of all capital campaigns.
  • Enlist, train, and motivate volunteer leaders to assist in the successful implementation of ongoing development programs.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
