Job Description

We are seeking a Summer - R&D Undergraduate Intern to join our dynamic team! The successful candidate will work in support of staff members and postdoctoral appointees to develop and test robotic, electromechanical, unmanned and/or autonomous systems for projects in a fast-paced team environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing software to render data, gathered by robotic or unmanned systems, in a virtual or augmented reality headset, to help human users and developers understand and interact with the data. Secondarily, you may work on other projects related to robotic, electromechanical, unmanned and/or autonomous systems, for example: electromechanical integration of sensorized robotic vehicles, the development of software modules to enable integration of algorithms and physical components, and/or the conduct of experiments to evaluate new technologies. You may work on projects related to robotics, prosthetics, autonomy and/or sensors. You will perform hardware and software tests and document results, under supervision of professional research and development staff. You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements: + Currently attending and enrolled full time (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited undergraduate program + Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major + Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0 + Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer + U.S. citizenship Note: If you have not yet started your undergraduate program, please apply to a high school intern position.

+ Experience with software development or computer programming relevant to the use of emerging virtual or augmented reality devices to render data + Experience with programming in Python, C/C++, and/or the Robot Operating System (ROS) + Experience working with gaming engines or virtual reality devices + Experience with the development, testing, programming, or use of robotic, mechatronic, unmanned, autonomous or wirelessly controlled systems (e.g. aerial drones) + Experience with computer programming + Enrolled in undergraduate program in Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or related field + Interest in working in a team environment on the development and testing of novel technologies for robotic, unmanned, or autonomous systems

Department Description:

Organization 06533 Robotics and Counter-Robotics R&D, specializes in robotics, unmanned aerial systems (UAS), advanced controls, miniature mechanical design and fabrication, electronics, cybernetic systems, sensor systems and computer vision systems. The department established and maintains responsibility for several FAA Certificates of Authorization (COA) for unmanned aerial systems. The department conducts both basic research and applications development of robotic systems producing numerous patents and deployment of systems. The department conducts numerous active research, development and application projects for a variety of customers, both internal to Sandia and across the national security establishment, and collaborates heavily with partners across Sandia. The department is one of three in the High Consequence Automation and Robotics Group within the Weapon and Force Protection Center.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a clearance, a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted. Members of the workforce (MOWs) hired at Sandia who require uncleared access for greater than 179 days during their employment, are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) process. Access includes physical and/or cyber (logical) access, as well as remote access to any NNSA information technology (IT) systems. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment, SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of for Federal Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.
