Job Description

Under the direction of the Safeguards and Security (SAS) Division, Argonne National Laboratory is looking for an OPSEC Program Specialist to join the Classified Information Security Department.

Argonne National Laboratory is one of the top scientific destinations in the world. The Safeguards and Security Division implements the classified information security program for the site. Our Classified Information Security goal is to ensure that all employees have access to the information security resources necessary to achieve their scientific missions.

This position will be responsible for maintaining an OPSEC (Operations Security) program, developing security awareness training and serve as a liaison to the programmatic staff for classified information security needs.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Develop, publish, execute and implement appropriate regulations and policies to the National Security Presidential Memorandum/NSPM-28, The National Operations Security Program.
  • Serve as the Operations Security (OPSEC) Program Manager. The Program Manager is responsible for the coordination of all OPSEC policies and procedures within the program and revise as needed. Accumulate and disseminate updated threat information and awareness materials to program personnel. Report to the Chair of the Organization and/or Chief of Security on all OPSEC matters.
  • Serve as an Inquiry Official to conduct formal investigations of incidents of security concern. Ensure security violations, including suspected compromises or other threats to the safeguarding of classified information and the unauthorized disclosure of Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) are appropriately reported and investigated.
  • Develops and implements an effective information security and security awareness education program throughout the laboratory and provide initial, continuing, and refresher security education training to all site employees.
  • Serve as a Derivative Classifier to assist the Classification Officer with derivatively classifying or upgrading documents or materials in accordance with the jurisdiction, subject areas, and any additional authorities.
  • Participate in assessments and evaluate compliance of activities with complex security requirements, identifies deficiencies, and ensures corrective action is identified for each deficiency found; analyze weaknesses identified during information security program reviews in order to modify and apply recommended solutions.
  • Serve as a liaison to laboratory staff in matters pertaining to the enforcement of regulations governing the access to, and the dissemination, reproduction, transmission, transportation, safeguarding, and destruction of classified or CUI information and material.

Position Requirements

  • Proven ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Strong knowledge, experience, and skill in implementing an OPSEC and information security program and security training programs.
  • Considerable knowledge, experience and understanding of DOE directives related to classification and information security is strongly preferred.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with people in a wide variety of job classifications at all levels of an organization. Proven ability to effectively cultivate and foster strong working relationships with team members, laboratory personnel, management, and external contacts.
  • The ability to multi-task and work independently in a fast-paced environment to produce results involving competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Proficient with the use of personal computers and Windows applications (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, Visio, Power Point, Access, etc.).
  • To perform the essential functions of this position successful applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, which is required to comply with federal regulations and contract. Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q Clearance.

Educational requirement:

Bachelors and 4+ years or a Masters and 2+ years, or equivalent
