Job Description
The Low-Energy Nuclear Physics Research Group (LER) of the Physics Division at Argonne National Laboratory seeks outstanding individuals to fill an open postdoctoral position to develop and conduct experiments at the N=126 Factory within the ATLAS facility. The postdoc will be engaged in optimizing and developing beams with the N=126 Factory and conducting experiments with these beams. The selected postdoc will:
Apply knowledge to design, fabricate, assemble, and test subsystems for the N=126 Factory and experiments.
Operate and lead improvements for any and all parts of the N=126 Factory including vacuum, laser, high voltage, and electronic systems.
Interface with other groups collaborating on experiments with the N=126 Factory.
Develop concepts and codes for numerical simulations and data analysis.
Participate in writing of scientific manuscripts, presentation of results at scientific conferences, and project reports, including writing first drafts and editing drafts of documents written by others in the collaboration.
Provide day-to-day supervision and mentoring of both graduate and undergraduate students involved with the N=126 Factory and associated experiments.
LER performs world-leading research in nuclear structure, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental symmetries, and nuclear data. The Group also manages and operates world-class detector systems as part of the ATLAS accelerator facility, a DOE Office of Nuclear Physics National User Facility for low-energy nuclear physics research. ATLAS provides world-unique rare isotope beams from either the CARIBU (Californium Rare Ion Breeder Upgrade) source or the ATLAS In-Flight Facility. In addition, members of the group are leading experimental programs at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB). Information on the activities of the Group and the Division can be found at https://www.anl.gov/phy.
The appointment will be for two years, with the possibility of an extension for up to 3 years depending on funding and performance. Applicants must apply with an updated CV. Three (3) letters of reference should be sent to Dr. Guy Savard (savard@anl.gov). Please note that only applications through Argonne website will be considered.
Review of applicants will begin May 14, 2024.
Position Requirements
Candidates considered for the position must have:
Recently received or near completion of their Ph.D. in nuclear physics or related discipline within the last 3 years.
A strong background in the field of Experimental Nuclear Physics.
Experience at conceiving and executing research projects in the areas of experimental nuclear physics, including data analysis and physics interpretation, and publishing of the results in scientific journals.
Substantial hands-on experience with vacuum systems, electronics, and high voltage systems.
Knowledge of computer languages such as Python, Java or C++ and good programing skills.
Experience with conducting simulations of ion transport and/or detection using codes such as GEANT4 or SimION.
Strong self-motivation, desire and skill to perform a wide variety of hands-on and sometimes physically demanding laboratory work with only general direction from supervisors.
Creativity in devising and implementing solutions to new and complex technical problems.
Technical judgement based on the capability to recognize a problem and then apply basic principles of physics and engineering to devise solutions.
Strong desire to interact with and mentor students from a variety of backgrounds and levels of experience.
·Capability to work effectively on technical problems in a fast-paced, demanding, and oftentimes, deadline driven environment.
·Good communication skills and the desire and ability to discuss technical ideas closely with colleagues, including off-site collaborators.
Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.
