What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking an R&D Materials Scientist to join our team in Livermore, CA to help solve exciting challenges related to metallic materials manufactured using both conventional and advanced techniques. A key project focuses on how we might qualify parts produced via laser powder bed fusion more effectively and efficiently, including by generating process/structure/property/performance relationships and leveraging them to better understand and reduce part-to-part variation and to understand when and how parts might be transferred across different production machines. This is a great opportunity for an experimentalist who is interested in both leading and collaborating multidisciplinary projects with engineers, other experimentalists, and theorists and to leverage unique and differentiating equipment. The successful candidate will coordinate with and may travel to other Department of Energy sites to improve the technology and manufacturing readiness levels of additive manufacturing.

On any given day, you will:

  • Design and conduct custom laboratory experiments to understand the effects of process parameters and aging on conventional and additively-manufactured metals
  • Collaborate with a diverse team of fellow experimentalists, as well as engineers, theoreticians, machine learning experts, and others
  • Share research findings internally through specifications, reports, and engineering documents; and with the wider scientific community in conferences and peer-reviewed publications

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Qualifications We Require:

  • PhD in materials science and engineering, metallurgy, mechanical engineering, or a closely related field; or Master's degree plus 4 or more years' related experience; or Bachelor's degree plus 8 or more years' related experience. Equivalent experience in lieu of degrees must be engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • A record of first-author or co-authored scientific publications in the above areas within peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

We don’t expect candidates to have experience with all of these, but candidates are more aligned with this position if they have one or more of the following:

  • Experience with metal additive manufacturing technologies (especially laser power bed fusion)
  • Experience with microscopy, spectroscopy, and/or mechanical characterization to develop process-structure-property performance relationships
  • Knowledge of non-destructive evaluation techniques such as dye penetrant, X-ray, Computed Tomography, structured-light scanning, Eddy current, or ultrasound
  • Previous experience supporting the Nuclear Security Enterprise
  • Working knowledge of in situ process monitoring, instrument control, data acquisition/management, machine learning

About Our Team:

The Energy Nanomaterials Department is a research organization specializing in the synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials for energy and national security applications. Projects and capabilities in the department's research portfolio include maturation of additively-manufactured metallic alloys; the formulation, synthesis, and characterization of materials for energy and hydrogen storage; and nanoscale materials characterization including extensive electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction.

Position Information:

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
