Job Description

The Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) houses world-class supercomputers, with attendant supporting software and infrastructure, for use by open-science researchers. The mission of this role, Computational Scientist for University Partnerships, is to cultivate enduring partnerships with academic institutions, supporting university compute center staff on ALCF systems, expanding the ALCF user base, and broadening the reach to the next generation of computing professionals. This initiative will provide the tools, resources, and user access to state-of-the-art supercomputers at Argonne National Laboratory.

In this role you can expect to:

  • Seek out, build, and partner with universities and institutions with the goal of creating interest in and developing partnerships around the use of the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) high-performance computing (HPC).
  • Actively work in building relationships and engagements using your technical knowledge, experience, and expertise to provide research-specific advice and guidance towards scientific and engineering advancements using HPC at ALCF.
  • Share examples and demonstrate the benefits and value of partnering with the ALCF to encourage HPC use at various universities/institutions.
  • Provide an enduring scientific point of contact for these projects and help mesh their computational campaign needs with facility resources.
  • Draw on knowledge of high-performance computational science to provide expert advice and assistance to enable breakthrough science and engineering research at the ALCF.
  • Work closely with teams using the ALCF to enhance their ability to do science.
  • Maintain a suite of software to enable university projects to quickly make progress using best-in-class open-source software.
  • Build relations with computing experts in the Computing, Environmental and Life Sciences (CELS) Directorate and domain experts across Argonne National Laboratory to better support university projects.
  • Build relationships with other supercomputer centers to address common challenges.
  • Support first-of-kind computational analysis requiring interdisciplinary expertise in both computer science and a scientific or engineering field, including knowledge of scientific and engineering principles, large-scale distributed or parallel computing techniques, and computational issues in a specific domain.
  • Travel to universities to give seminars and build relationships.
  • Track all projects and provide regular reports to ALCF management.

Position Requirements

Required skills and qualifications:

  • PA4: Bachelor’s degree and 6+ years of experience, or equivalent.
  • Knowledge and technical skills of high-performance computing and computational science, particularly in one or more science domains.
  • Experience with solving computational science problems using scalable parallel computers and large data systems.
  • Experience in interdisciplinary research involving scientists, mathematicians, computer scientists, and engineers.
  • Effective communication skills including written, verbal, active listening, presentation, and facilitation skills.
  • Strong interest and ability in developing, building, and maintaining relationships.
  • Successful in sustaining consensus and collaboration among key internal and external stakeholders, including sponsors, managers, team members, and other professionals throughout the organization.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to uncover and lead group decisions to consensus.
  • Ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

Preferred skills:

  • Experience working in a compute center at a university.
