The Hunt laboratory is focused on providing mechanistic explanations at the cellular and circuit levels for cognitive functions such as learning and memory. The research team seeks to understand how basic physiological processes are corrupted in pathological states and neurological disorders.

Working under direct supervision, the Research Associate I will perform a variety of routine experimental protocols and procedures to support the objectives of one or more laboratory research projects in a specific area of research. The incumbent will assist in general laboratory activities, including maintenance of reagents, stocking of supplies, maintaining files, and monitors documents. The RA I member keeps accurate and detailed records of experiments and results, and assists in the operation of specialized equipment and machinery. The incumbent observes safety standards and procedures. The Research Associate I will be able to perform routine cellular, micro- and molecular biology procedures including, but not limited to cell culture, Immunohistochemistry, and staining. This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs a variety of routine laboratory tasks and procedures.
  • May assist with animal husbandry.
  • Maintains lab equipment and related records.
  • Transports, processes, and logs samples.
  • Maintains computer database with relevant clinical information.
  • Performs lab maintenance duties, including glassware cleaning and sterilization.
  • Maintains stocks of general lab materials and places orders for lab equipment and supplies.
  • Assists new students and fellows at the laboratory.

Department-Specific Duties:

  • Assists with data acquisition and analysis for a research project funded by the Whitehall Foundation.
  • Performs survival surgery, which includes viral injection and head-bar attachment. After a recovery period, the incumbent will train these animals to navigate in a virtual environment for a water reward. At the end of the training period, the incumbent will perform acute electrophysiological recordings from these animals and will assist with the analysis of the behavioral and electrophysiological data acquired from these experiments.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in a Science related field required.

Experience and Skills:

  • Understanding of general research objectives.
  • Knowledge of database management, computers, and presentation and imaging software.
  • Experience with routine laboratory procedures and experimental protocols.
  • Must possess digital literacy to include, but not limited to, Excel and Word.
